Masters Degree Thesis Project

This Master degree thesis project is based in the city centre of Rotterdam in Holland. The city of Rotterdam was rebuilt dramatically after World War 2 with a special method of planning called Land Readjustment. This method not only changed the old medieval parcellation of the city, it also incorporated new roads, cycling roads, green spaces, courtyards and parks into the city centre. This case study on Rotterdam focuses particularly on this use of Land Readjustment and explains the process of regeneration of the city centre. Rotterdam has a significant historical meaning in architectural design. The practical use of Land Readjustment in Rotterdam presents it as a Utopian city in Europe. The urban quality of the city centre (in particular the Coolsingel Boulevard) and its environmental elements can be introduced as an interesting case study.
